This idea I actually had in a dream, just moments before I woke up one morning. I might have something to do with the fact that I just finished brushing my daughter’s hair the night before.. Who knows. Ask Freud.
Anyway, that morning I grabbed a scrap of paper and did a (literally) 3 second scribble/sketch so I wouldn’t forget the idea.
Later that day when I had a bit more time, I did this initial sketch.
This let me figure out the angle and the slightly fisheye effect I had imagined.
From here, into the scanner and then line work in Illustrator. My first rendering had a strong basic face, but the curlers were not reading well to me. All the extra detail in the curlers and the hair wrapped around the curlers fell far too busy.
Ah, much better!
Finally a little clean up here and there plus some color to make the face pop. And we’re done!
Now I just need to sell a few million shirts…
